Portuguese settlers arrived in the 15th Century but French
control grew in the 17th Century. The last independent Moslem
state was subdued in 1893 and Dakar became the capital of French
West Africa. Independence, along with the Sundanses Republic,
came on June 20, 1960 and on August 20, Senegal withdrew. French
political and economic independence is strong. Long droughts in
1972-73 and in 1978 brought famine to the country. On December
17, 1981, Senegal signed an agreement with Gambia for
confederation of the two counties under Sene-gambia. The
confederation began on February 1, 1982. The two nations retain
their individual sovereignty but share defense and monetary
policies.
